My name is Amber Lowi. I am a graduate student at San Francisco State University and I am conducting a research study about how adolescents adapt to living overseas. I am recruiting adolescent participants who meet the following eligibility requirements:

            1) between 14-18 years old,

            2) living abroad as an expatriate or Third Culture Kid, and

            3) currently living with at least one parent in the family home.

Parent and adolescents who chose to participate will be asked to complete a survey. The survey consists of two sections, a parent section and an adolescent section.

The parent portion of the survey will take no longer than 10 minutes to complete.  The first item in the parent portion is the consent document. (A copy of this document is posted here for you or your parent to review)Your parent will be asked to give electronic consent to allow you to participate in the survey. Other questions in the parent portion of the survey pertain to information regarding demographics such as age, gender, race/ethnicity and education.

The adolescent portion of the survey will take no longer than 40 minutes to complete. The first item in the adolescent portion is the assent document. (A copy of this document is also posted on this site.) You will be asked to give electronic assent for you to participate. The survey will ask demographic questions such as age, gender, race/ethnicity, and foreign language ability. Other questions will assess your perceptions of self, family, school and experiences in the host country.

If you are willing to complete the survey, there are two steps. First, I will ask that you read over the Assent Document posted on this site and that you contact me with any questions. Second, if you agree to participate, you will be emailed a 3-digit code and an URL that will take you to the survey.

At the completion of this study, adolescent participants will be entered into a random drawing for one of three iPod Shuffle© MP3 players. 

The study is completely confidential. Parents will not be able to view the adolescent’s answers. In addition, adolescent participants will not be able to view their parent’s answers.
